Maybe not with everything, but with air filters, SIZE MATTERS!
In the olden times, the beginning days of the air conditioner, an air filter had but one purpose. Its whole existence was to protect the innards of your AC and furnace from dust, dirt, moisture and other particulates. That was it. That was all science understood; as a society who still largely smoked cigarettes indoors, we were 100% ignorant to how this impacted our health.
As science has evolved, so has our understanding of how the air we breathe impacts our health, and what we can do to keep that air as clean as possible. Mankind has learned all about allergens and volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs, and what they do to our air quality. While we used to have no words to describe these things we didn't know existed, today we call them contaminants and pollutants.
As soon as humans discovered that these contaminates and pollutants were making people sick, and even killing them en masse, we started creating technology to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. One of the pinnacles of that technology is the media filter, but unfortunately, media filters happen to be one of those inventions that its purpose isn't immediately clear upon hearing its name, unlike the salad shooter or speed loader. So what is a media filter?
Generally speaking, most air filters are 1". These do a decent enough job keeping particulates out of your HVAC equipment abnd out of your lungs, but when it comes to you and your family's health, is decent anywhere good enough? Additionally, there can be unforseen problems when using such a small filter, which we will highlight below.
Austin Refrigeration & Air Conditioning is a decades old, second generation family business operating out of Austin and servicing all of Central Texas. If you have any commercial refrigeration needs, or residential/commercial HVAC needs, check out our main website and see how we can help you today.
If a 1" filter has a MERV rating higher than 12, it may result in static pressure building up within your HVAC system.
Filter racks for 1" filters are often haphazardly made and installed, meaning debris could travel around your filter and into your machine.
Traditional 1" air filters offer absolutely zero odor control, meaning all sorts of unpleasant smells will travel through your home.
With only 1" of protection, traditional air filters can have gases, dirt, mold and who knows what else travel right through them.
The longer a 1" air filter stays in your machine, the dirtier it gets. For one of these to get filthy doesn't take any time at all.
Being 4", Media Filters have at least X4 the stopping power of a traditional 1" air filter, meaning your air is X4 times cleaner.
Some Media Filters all have an incredibly high MERV rating, meaning the air you are breathing is as clean as can be.
Since Media Filters have superior racks in which they are placed, less debris will make it around your filter than a traditional filter rack.
Instead of changing your 1" filter monthly, Media Filters only need to be changed once or twice a year.
Get as high of a MERV rating as your heart desires! With Media Filters, your static pressure will always be low.
Instead of a filter that allows terrible smells to travel through your home or business unencumbered, Media Filters smell great!
Air conditioning and heating are supposed to bring comfort, not illness.
